‘Batman V Superman’ Rumor: Lex Luthor Will Use His War Suit

The conflict between Bruce Wayne and Kal-El has been the focus of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice marketing thus far, but the two heroes will no doubt eventually settle their differences and battle a common enemy (forming the Justice League in the process). That foe is heavily rumored to be the Superman villain Doomsday, but there’s a chance he’s not the only physical threat to our (super)heroes.

Enter one of the film’s biggest mysteries right now: Lex Luthor. We’ve only seen one pictureof Jesse Eisenberg in character, so fans have been speculating about how involved he’ll be in the proceedings. Obviously, Luthor can do great damage to Superman with his mind and intellect, but throughout his publication history, he’s found ways to do combat with the Last Son of Krypton – most famously with his battle armor war suit. So will Zack Snyder showcase a Luthor that uses brains and brawn in his film? Rumor has it he will.

This rumor comes from JoBlo‘s sources, who say Luthor’s iconic green and purple war suit (which has made several appearances in various media over the years) will make its live-action cinematic debut in Batman V Superman. Its appearance will (supposedly) be heavily based on the one fans are used to, with only with the necessary alterations so that it can fit the style of Warner Bros.’ DC shared cinematic universe. As for how big of a role the suit will have in the movie, JoBlo could only say that Luthor would be wearing it for part of the film, but they’re unsure if it is just for the finale or multiple action sequences.

JoBlo‘s report suggests it’s possible the villain will engage in a hand-to-hand fight with Superman (assuming Luthor does, in fact, don his war suit). Some readers may point out that this seemingly contradicts the rumor from just the other day – claiming that Doomsday is the “muscle” Luthor teams up with to eliminate the heroes.  JoBlo is confirming the existence of a second villain in the film (besides Luthor), but wouldn’t say for sure if it was Doomsday or not. In short, best to take all this Dawn of Justice rumor-mongering with the customary grain of salt.

One of the rumors that does seem like more and more of a lock, however, is the one that stated Luthor will obtain the corpse of General Zod in order to run experiments and develop Kryptonian technology for his own purposes (which is one theory for how his suit is created). Whether or not that means Michael Shannon will be returning as well remains to be seen, but odds are that Luthor will come into contact with the Man of Steel baddie at some point in Dawn of Justice – whether it’s to build his war suit, unleash Doomsday, or some other evil task we haven’t heard of yet.

We can only hope that this war suit rumor pans out, because it would be a nice addition to Snyder’s film. Not only would it embrace the long history of the character, it would also give audiences something fresh to separate Eisenberg’s Luthor from past iterations. A Luthor not afraid to get his hands dirty has the potential to be a formidable enemy; and since it’s theorized he’ll be in the fold for the near future, it makes sense for him to have some equipment to keep up with the super powered specimens he’ll be warring against.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will be in theaters on March 25th, 2016; Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman – June 23rd, 2017; Justice League – November 17th, 2017; The Flash – March 23rd, 2018; Aquaman – July 27th, 2018; Shazam – April 5th, 2019; Justice League 2 – June 14th, 2019; Cyborg – April 3rd, 2020; Green Lantern – June 19th, 2020.
